AID is not enough for development

Help at Hand

The ‘Help at Hand’ programme came out of our’ Things fall apart project’ which was an answer to a current crisis the charity faced across two boroughs, Lambeth and Wandsworth. We experienced a huge spike in the demands for our services as individuals sought support and representation in immigration matters.

The call for immigration support were from a number of new families from Europe Africa, South American and Asia, who had to submit applications to the Home Office to maintain their status – work permits, student permits, partner visa, and for some to get their first British Passport for themselves or their children.

From addressing this one identified need a matrix of other attendant needs were identified and many were struggling to survive as they could not afford solicitors costs, application fees and standard cost of living. This resulted in many having to go without the basics. This meant people were becoming dehumanized and this was painful for us to witness. We had to do something and out of this desire to help emerged Help at Hand.

The Help at Hand focused on assisting individuals in dire financial need to better use their limited resources to live. The project is centered on finding goods for clients that are free or cost very little. This project services all of SUFA’s current clients who have been receiving support in a number of key areas:
